Housing Statistics

The Community Housing Cymru Group has over 70 members all over Wales.

Our members provide homes and housing related services to over 153,000 households across Wales.

There are currently over 91,000 households on housing waiting lists.

So far, 11 local authorities have transferred their housing stock to new not-for-profit organisations.

There is a network of 10 Rural Housing Enablers (Experts) in Wales who act as independent advisers, working with housing associations, local authorities, community councils, national parks and other organisations to facilitate the delivery of affordable housing in rural areas.

It is estimated that there are over 1.3 millions properties in Wales, with almost three quarters of those owner-occupied and a further 10% privately rented.

Around 15,000 people in Wales borrow from loan sharks every year.

Around 150,000 people in Wales borrow from high interest money lenders every year.

Did you know that in 2011/12, Welsh Housing Associations:

  • Built 1973 new affordable homes – just over a quarter of the Welsh Government’s 7,500 target
  • 73% of the 1973 homes were built using Social Housing Grant.
  • Spent £951m in the economy in 2011/12 – 80% of that spend was retained in Wales.
  • Spent £493m on regenerations projects
  •  57% of regeneration spend went on repairs and maintenance - including bringing properties up to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard.
  • Directly employed 7,500 people – but for every direct job, a further two were supported in the local economy meaning 20,200 jobs were supported by the work of the sector.

We are a sector with the ability and track record to deliver.
